 Girls’ Volleyball

The team chemistry is building.  The OLL girls’ volleyb= all team has had an exciting few weeks.&= nbsp; The JV team, Millie Piggott, Kimberley Thompson, Joanna Powers, Leah Cox, Claudia Schweighardt, and Grace Massarelli defeated Immacul= ata 25-23 in a game that even the referee joked looked like it was going = to “sudden death.”  There was great sportsmanship on both parts, just over excited scorekeepers and line judges during the match.  Ms Huger and Ms Powers should definitely keep their day jobs!

“I just wanted to let EVERYONE know how very proud Coach

Mary &= I are of the girls!  Regardless of the scores, the <= /p>

girls do an amazing job….The games, to me, are awesome,

and it will only = get better!  I

am so excited!”  Coach Kara

Roach=

Coach Kara’s enthusiasm is contagious. You get a sense of

the pr= ide these coaches have, and the motivation they generate on=

the OLL girls’ volleyball team. This year has been full of great competition and closely contested games. The girls have worked hard, and their positive energy has not waned. In the last few games,

Varsity players Rachel Cox and Katie

Dold have played excellent defense. Varsity player Shannon Powers has turned i= nto a power server. JV  player J= oanna Powers has also had some great serves, and Varsity player

Nicole Gooch has had some really great saves.

Most recently, The Varsity Lady Lions have played three matches, losing to the Franciscan School, Immaculata, and St. Michael’s.  However, t= he final score does not reflect their playing.  Each match has been close and ex= citing until the end, with aces, spikes and blocked shots.  The Varsity team members Shannon Powers, Maddie Massarelli, Katie Dold, Rachel Cox, Ashton Byrne, and Nico= le Gooch Mallory Drake, Wynn Saleeby, and Lane Huger are having a great time.  As one of the players= said, “We are having so much fun and enjoy each other so much that winning pales in comparison to the good times we are having.”

Boys’ Soccer

The OLL Lions played the St. Mary Magdelene Mona= rchs on Wed. Sept. 4th at home.  Having lost to the Monarchs = the prior week, the Lions were very motivated to change the result.  The Lions came out strong, w= ith Robert Povlock scoring his first goal as an OLL Lion on a pass from N= ick Williams.  Shortly after, Andrew Mihok scored on a pass from Andrew King.  Later in the first half, Nick Williams dribbled the ball in for the third goal of the half.  After the Monarchs countered= with a goal, the Lions led 3-1 at the half.  The second half was tightly contested.  A missed Pen= alty Kick by the Lions, and two goals by the Monarchs brought the score to a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation.  After the first 5 minute ove= rtime, the score remained 3-3.  But the Monarchs would break the tie in the second overtime and win the game 4-3.  It was a disappoin= ting end for the Lions.  Howe= ver, the Lions showed a lot of grit and learned from the game.

On Thursday, Sept 6th, the Lions went= to Chapel Hill to face St Thomas More, last year’s tournament champs.  It was a hard fought game with STM having 5 shots on goal to t= he OLL 4.  The Lions held t= hem to one goal each half.  On = the offensive end of the field, the Lions had trouble winning many of the 50/50 balls which allowed STM to control the game.  The final score was 2-0, giv= ing the Lions a 1-4 record.

The Montessori School of Raleigh came to OLL on Monday, Sept. 10th.  Though not a conference game, the Lions showed that they came = to play and win.  OLL had 3= first half goals, one from Robert Povlock off a pass from Andrew King, one = from Nick Williams and one from Jacques LeBlanc.  Jacques also scored one goal= in the waning minutes of the second half to post a 4-0 win for the Lions.  The Lions’= defense made it difficult for MRS to get any offense going.  Patrick Domville, Nick Despo= tes, Sherwood Callaway, and Luke Enzweiler are becoming quite a defensive force.  Great passing and shots were made by Jeffrey Crawford, Noah Dickerson, Paxton Massarell= i, Philip Cooley, Andrew Dilillo, and Andrew Mihok.  Congratulations to Ryan Lawr= ence and Andrew King for a great job at goalie.

Looking great and playing great, the OLL b= oys soccer team had a decisive win over TFS 2-0 on Mon 9/17.   All the boys played gr= eat but in particular was Ryan Lawrence, at goal who saved many shots throughout the game.  Al= so, in one instance, when it seemed as if a goal was inevitable, Nick Despot= es came out of nowhere and headed the ball out to preserve the shutout.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  The first half was scoreless= .  OLL broke the tie to lead 1-= 0 in the middle of the second half with a goal by Nick Williams on =

a long kick from Luke Enzweiler.  To quote Coach LeBlanc, R= 20;it was b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l”.  The second goal came with about 5 minutes to go.  Jacques LeBlanc passed the b= all across the field and Andrew King scored.

OLL = played Immaculata on Wednesday, 9/19 at home.  The Lions scored early in the first half on a kick from Andrew King.  Philip Cooley was credited w= ith the assist as his shot on goal rebounded to Andrew King who went on to score a goal.  The Lions= would hold this 1-0 lead until very late in the second half when the Eagles scored on free kick.  As= the game went into overtime, Sr. Ruth and Sr. Rita decided that the tensi= on was too much and left for dinner.&nb= sp; After two scoreless 5 minute overtimes, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.  Andrew Dilillo and Jacques LeBlanc were fearless at midfield winning most of the 50/50 b= alls that came their way.

It was ano= ther day, another overtime on Thursday Sept. 20 as the Lions played St Michael’s for the second time in Cary.  Despite the rain,(which the fans felt a lot more than the players) the Lions’ defense k= ept St. Michael’s scoreless in regulation.  In overtime, St. MichaelR= 17;s scored on a penalty kick and later sealed the win with another goal.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  Though a loss, the Lions sho= wed real grit and are definitely a team on the move.  The Lions are now 3-5-1.

Laurie Huger gets a big OLL thanks for coaching a girls’ lacrosse clinic this fall.  Middle school girls can lear= n the basics or brush up on their skills.&= nbsp; The clinics are after school on 10/1, 10/10, 10/12,

The OLL boys’ soccer team wants to thank HASA for their new Addidas= uniforms.  Come out and see how good th= ey look as the Lions play Sept 26th, and Oct. 2nd = at the OLL field.
