Curriculum

Computer Curriculum

Kindergarten through Second Grade

Students identify the computer as a machine that helps people work and play.  They begin to understand how a computer works and use correct terminology to identify parts of the computer.  Students use programs that encourage the use of the mouse and locating letters on the keyboard, while also reinforcing concepts taught in their classroom curriculum.  Students explore multimedia and begin observing online resources.  Programs used at this level include KidPix, Numbers Undercover, A to Zap! and Bailey’s Book House.

Third through Fifth Grade

In third through fifth grade, students begin working on proper keyboarding techniques, as well as continuing to develop the skills introduced in the K-3 curriculum.  Students create projects using word processing and multimedia software to enhance classroom curriculum.  Students also use the Internet as research tool. Fourth and Fifth grade students begin using databases and spreadsheets.  Programs used include Type to Learn, Storybook Weaver, Kid Pix, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Sixth through Eighth Grade

Middle school students focus on word processing, spreadsheets, database use, multimedia, and use of the Internet.  Classroom curriculum is integrated into computer lab projects as often as possible.  Skills in these areas are needed to take the North Carolina Test of Computer Skills, which every eighth grade student at Our Lady of Lourdes takes in the spring of his/her eighth grade year.  Programs used in the middle school classes are Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
